Behaviour/Relational Approach

Building positive relationships, emotional regulation and a strong sense of belonging

We believe that behaviour is communication. Our approach is built around positive relationships, understanding children’s needs and helping them develop the skills to manage their emotions and behaviour.

We want every child to feel safe, valued, understood and ready to learn.

Our Approach

We do not believe in blind compliance. Instead, we teach children to take responsibility for their behaviour, learn from mistakes and develop the confidence and resilience to make positive choices.

Our expectations are simple:

Safe. Kind. Ready. Fix Mistakes.

Our staff model these expectations every day through calm, consistent and respectful relationships. We focus on noticing and celebrating positive behaviour, while providing support when children find things difficult.

Emotion Coaching

Emotion Coaching is an important part of our approach.

We help children recognise and understand their emotions, feel supported when emotions are difficult and develop strategies to regulate themselves.

We see challenging behaviour as an opportunity to understand what a child may be communicating and to help them find a more positive way forward.

Celebrating Positive Behaviour

We believe children should feel proud of their achievements and contributions to our school community.

We use a range of approaches to recognise positive behaviour, teamwork, kindness and children who go above and beyond. These include our Recognition Boards, Jars of Joy, Postcards, Spotlight and Feel Good Friday.

Supporting Children When Things Go Wrong

When behaviour does not meet our expectations, we respond calmly and consistently. Children are given opportunities to reflect, regulate and make better choices.

For children who need additional support, we use personalised strategies and, where appropriate, Relationship & Regulation Plans. We work closely with families to understand individual needs and help children succeed.

Our Quiet Space and pastoral support provide additional opportunities for children to regulate when they are finding things particularly difficult.

Working Together

We believe that positive behaviour is everyone’s responsibility. Strong relationships between children, staff and families are at the heart of our approach.

Our aim is to help every child develop the confidence and skills to manage emotions, build positive relationships, resolve difficulties and learn from mistakes.
